The basic premise of this Nuzlocke variant is that you start out with only one type, then gain the other types by completing various objectives throughout the game, such as defeating gym leaders. The objectives you must complete are different for each generation.

If you randomize a ROM for the purposes of playing a Gainlocke, it is recommeded that you use Dabostew's Universal Pokemon Randomizer, as some of the rules are written with that randomizer's options in mind.

Tweet @Algernonab if you have suggestions on how to make this variant better. It's still in its Beta form.

Edit

  1. If a Pokemon faints, then you have to heal
  2. It is recommended to nickname all of your Pokemon. The purpose of this is to help foster a relationship between Trainer and Pokemon.
  3. If your game is Randomized (recommended), Gym Leaders must specialize in a type specified by the Randomizer. This can be accomplished by selecting "Type Themed" in the Trainer Pokemon section of the Universal Pokemon Randomizer. The type you gain by defeating that Gym Leader is the type that they specialize in.
  4. The other types that are not given via Gym Leaders are given by various objectives that can be completed before the Elite Four, but are not crucial to the main storyline. The actual objectives themselves are specified below for each generation. The achievement that you must complete to get each non-Gym Leader type should be randomly determined.
  5. The remaining type (neither Gym Leader nor received from an objective) is your starting type. Your starter Pokemon should be a manually inputed Pokemon of your starting type using the "Custom" option in the Universal Pokemon Randomizer.
  6. You may only use Pokemon that either are, or will evolve into, a type that you have unlocked. (For example, if you have the Fighting type unlocked, but not the Water type, and you have a Poliwag, you may use the Poliwag, as long as it does not evolve into Politoed, since Poliwag and Poliwhirl can evolve into Poliwrath, a Water/Fighting type).*
  7. Any caught Pokemon in the wild (specified by the rules above) that do not meet the criteria presented in Rule 7 must be placed in the PC box until you unlock an eligible type.
  8. It is recommended that HMs be given full compability with your Pokemon to avoid HM Slaves. This can be accomplished during randomization in the Universal Pokemon Randomizer.

*Note in regards to Rule 7: When playing Generation 6+, Mega-Evolution types are NOT counted in terms of whether you can use a Pokemon or not. For instance, if you have Dark type unlocked, but neither Water nor Flying, just because Gyarados Mega-Evolves into a Water/Dark type, that does not mean you can use a Magikarp or a Gyarados.
